The main purpose of this website is to create a space for online class discussions about music, provide access to materials and recordings of music covered in class, and to discover even more music from our wide, wide world.
About Dr. Jones:
Dr. Jones is a professional flutist who grew up in Austin, TX. No one in her immediate family is a professional musician, but she does have a cousin who is an excellent jazz singer.
Her favorite thing about music is its richness as a starting point for thinking about everything else in this world–culture, history, physics, aesthetics, economics, politics–on top of being fun to play and listen to!
Her favorite composer is Jean Sibelius, but she also loves music by George Crumb, Johannes Brahms, Carlo Gesualdo, Toru Takemitsu, and Hilary Tann. In the non-classical musical world, she’s currently listening to Christine and the Queens, Al Green, The Kinks, Kendrick Lamar, King Los, Run the Jewels, Nina Simone, Stromae, Thundercat, and War.
Dr. Jones received a BA in music from Yale University, a MM and AD in flute performance from SUNY Purchase, and a DMA in flute performance from the CUNY Graduate Center. She was a writing fellow at BMCC and taught music (appreciation, rudiments, sight singing and dictation, flute lessons, chamber music, and contemporary ensemble) for several years at the Aaron Copland School of Music at CUNY Queens College. She also teaches at SUNY Purchase and works in development at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. She performs with several chamber groups across NYC and the world:
- The Curiosity Cabinet, whose multidisciplinary events combine music of the 20th and 21st centuries with narration, acting, art, puppets, and dance
- Fiati Five, a woodwind quintet that has been performing across southern Italy since 2013
- conText, a soprano and flute duo
- Ensemble 365, a small mixed chamber group (soprano, flute, violin/viola, cello, piano) that performs an array of modern music from all over the world.
