This week, let’s think about the role music plays in defining our lives, educating others about our lives, and acting as an ambassador before we even make contact with others.

The Voyager spacecrafts were launched in 1977 and have traveled beyond the edges of our solar system, carrying information about life on Earth. Both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 contained a phonograph record of sounds and music selected by a committee chaired by Carl Sagan. The phonograph is nicknamed “The Golden Record.”
The recordings include the greetings in 55 languages; sounds of ocean surf, wind, thunder, footsteps, laughter, trains, and animal noises; and 90 minutes of music.
The plaque which is attached to the spacecraft includes a message from President Jimmy Carter:
This is a present from a small, distant world, a token of our sounds, our science, our images, our music, our thoughts and our feelings. We are attempting to survive our time so we may live into yours.

If we were to launch a similar spacecraft into space today to tell other beings in the universe what life on Earth is like, what would you suggest that we include? What aspects of life on Earth would need to be represented, and how could we do that? Explain why you think your chosen object, piece of music, or image needs to be on the spacecraft.

How do you choose items to send to space? I would not even know where to begin. I can only speak for myself when choosing music and things to put into a space probe that would go to space. Would my choices be good ones, does it really matter? Will anyone in space ever see what is in there? I wonder what Carl Sagan thought while figuring out what type of music and things to send on the Voyagers. How long did it take for the committee to decide what went in the Voyager? Did this responsibility weigh heavy on them? What was important to them enough to send it out to space? It would be hard to decide that today. I think I would start with one song from every genre and culture. Then I would put some significant items, like articles and stories that had an impact. This should be a choice made by all of us. There should be some kind of survey done for all to agree on, or at least have an opinion on.This one was a tough one. This would be something that would be spoken about in the future, this would be in history. Do I want to be responsible for that? Nope!

I think the survey would be a good idea but i dont think people would take it seriously. If the survey has only some options it would limit our imagination and if there’s no limit we probably won’t reach a desicion on what to send to space. Interesting proposal, what would you guys think would be the best way to make everyone part of this and still find a decision within a considerable amount of time?

I agree with Paula I think it would be very difficult to get everyone to decide on it. I think the only way to make everyone apart of this is having every culture and their religion of every country in the capsule. We can include music from every country and pictures to show everyone’s traditions and beliefs.

The idea of the survey is to convey the importance of the choices. It would not be just some random survey. It would be laid out so that everyone understands how important this capsule would be. It’s a time capsule, it would out in space for who knows how long, a long way after my lifetime and to know that I had a choice in what went into to the capsule would be amazing.

Sending music into space, come with alot of questions. I think choose of the music doesnt matter becasue ,by the time it reaches anyone the era of that music will be long gone or if the message is received whos to say they will reply. The vastness of space provides little to no answer. Especially to a concept such as music.

Wow, I never knew about the Voyagers and what they contained. Music/Audio is a great thing to include in the spacecraft. Music from all over the world is different in many ways and is a great representation of what that part of the world is like. It would be really hard to think of one piece of music to send. The music in these records is the most beautiful sound on earth and the most natural sound. This is undoubtedly making interesting sounds on the space station. This represents the trajectory of different lives. While we listen to these voices, we also need to remember to respect nature.

The Voyagers, I`ve heard of it before, but never really pay any mind to it. Reading it now, interestingly thinking about what would be a good content to fill the spacecraft for other beings in the universe to see Music/Audio/Photos, an absolute great representation of what our world contains. But aside from the sounds, music, photos listed above, perhaps including more photos of the foods people consume worldwide, picture of traditional clothing from tribes or so, photos of beaches, jungles, deep sea, sounds of screaming, yelling. Additionally, a deep and low sound, or a different tone of voices, and lullabies. We could do a survey as @ioanandrea suggested because its quite a heavy work for one person or a group of people to decide on. They don’t represent the majority. Why would I list the photos, voices above to be placed in the spacecraft, because that’s the aspect of life on Earth. Well, that what I believe is suit well in representing Earth. Would you agree with me that these are some good representations of life on Earth? It who we are, our origin, and our daily life. And the natural habitat that surrounds us. Also, our expressive tone, expressing our emotions. Lastly, audio of lullabies that blows babies to sleep in seconds would be a plus. Don`t you think?

Hey everyone,
Pretty cool topic, I would choose a picture of robots and tecnology advances. I think that is one of the most iconic and significant part of humanity progess in the last decades. Also I would put a picture of the amazon jungle, the Angel Falls and the Sahara Desert. Finally I would like to send a video of the aminals, in the wild, the jungle, the ocean, our pets and the human interactions with animals and society. Helping one another but also showing desforestation and contamination because at the end of the day we are not perfect but we are learning to improve our human race.

I would like to send some kind of recap on our worlds history. Whether it’s primary sources or some kind of device replaying our history and story’s and perspectives from people around the world as well as different forms of music and art. They all tell a story and if there is other life out there we’d want them to be our allies and understand how far the human race has come.

I agree. Kinda regret not reading through other peoples thoughts first. But if someone out there happens to make contact with what we send, we shouldn’t depict ourselves as a perfect species, we have major flaws and it wouldn’t be right to show them that. Maybe, if we’re lucky, they’ll help us.

I’m not familiar with Voyager and I’ve never been interested in space, let alone imagine what I’d bring with me up there. I’m assuming that Carl Sagan’s objective was to bring all the things that represent our world up there. Aside from the sounds of nature, animals and such, how did he pick the sounds of music. Since, one’s opinion on music can be very different from someone else’s. I mean if it were up to me, I’d probably mostly bring jazz and emotional music (better known as sad music); I’d make space either tear up or relax. Jokes aside, it is very cool and interesting that someone even came up with this idea; bringing everything that represents earth to the rest of the solar system.

While reading this I can agree with many of you that choosing one piece of music to share with Voyagers is a hard choice to make. How could one piece of music define life on earth? Personally, I believe it really depends on what aspect of life you are trying to show them. It depends on where they come from and what the would like to gain from listening to a single piece music. However, these questions cannot be answered and making a choice without these answers is very difficult. The history part of it is what makes this so nerve wrecking. This is something that need to show all aspects of life, but realize that music can be interpreted in many different ways. No matter what you choose, whether it be sounds of nature, modern music, relatively new music, maybe even country music, it will give at least the slightest bit of insight on life here on earth.

personally i would either leave behind a piece of music that defined life for me in that current moment, or I would leave behind a piece of music that brought back many memories for me, hoping that someone in the future could possibly relate or appreciate that piece of music.

I feel that the idea of sending items into space is like a time capsule. The question I feel is important to know is if anyone will ever find it. I feel like more research needs to be done about what is out there. I think a survey would be a great idea to give people insight on what they would want other life to know about society on Earth but how can we be sure they’d interpret things the way we’d want them to.

The thing I’d if we were to send a capsule into space who’s decision would it ultimately be. We would want the US to get to reach life before anyone else does and make sure any life out there is on our side but how could we if we don’t know what they understand?

Goodmorning, I have heard of The Voyagers before but I didn’t really care for it or think it was a big deal.
The music in these playlists I just listened to is relaxing and natural to my ears. These kind of reminded me of lullabies. What do you guys think ?Listening to these playlists that were provided made me realize that we need to understand, learn and respect our nature around us because it can help us improve around us.

Good afternoon everyone. I think if we get an alien invasion, it would be safe to put the blame on Mr. Carter and the Voyager mission. I personally would not have included the sacrificial dance or Johnny be goode, especially the sacrificial dance. That piece of music just sounds like we’re asking for trouble. I would have included more peaceful music and images of togetherness like people holding hands or hugging. Lots of hugging actually. Hopefully they won’t take it as a sign of weakness.

Aliens probably have different customs than we do. Who knows, the positive images and sounds that we think of might come off as aggressive to them or they may take it as a sign of weakness like you say and attack us.

If I were to send send a similar spacecraft for other beings, I would include musical instruments an electric guitar and a synthesizer, and vinyls of some of my favorite artists and I’d include pictures of national parks, big cities and of the people. I’d include instruments because music is one of the finer things in life pictures of wildlife to see how its like on earth

It kind of seems like the music themselves was telling their own story to them. The music is at a different tone to each one of the music.

to answer your question, I think the voyagers wanted to use these recordings to represent the time period they were living in, and to be able to incorporate the different types of activities and use this wide variety of music to represent the mood from those activities. in 2019, I definitely think the choice of music will be different due to newer styles of music that are more mainstream, to represent different events. the piece I enjoyed the most was “Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, “Die Holle Rache” because of its fast tempo and how it represents the intensity of the time period. what song or picture stood out to you from this reading and why?

I read about this before and I found it very fascinating. I feel like it just reminds us how small we are and how big this world is and there’s so much out there that we don’t know about yet.
If we were to do a similar space craft today I would want to include a pictures of life in each country because i think it’s important to also show the culture and how different we all are.

I also think is crazy how small we really are and how we know so much about space yet so little. We think we know it but the truth is most of space is still un studied and we are not sure what is really out there and thats whats fascinating about it.

I agree with including pictures from all over the world. I would also included news reports on the coronavirus, as it was such a big part of 2020. A time capsule from now would also need music from this century and important movies, such as Get Out. I would include that movie because it touched on race in America and won several awards. It’s an important piece of history from this last century.

I never knew about this. We learn something new every day. So the Golden Record contains music from various countries with different genres, and music that are made in different time periods. Not only music, they also took recordings of nature and animals into space. And they took pictures of people from various countries into space. I don’t get the purpose of this. Why do they take music and pictures into space? Do the astronauts forget how Earth feels like when they’re in space? Also, how do they hear music in space when you cannot hear sound in space?
If we send music and pictures into space in 2020, I feel like the “Modern Record” would contain dozens of pop songs from various countries. For the pictures, it would have the same theme but everything would be modernized. I honestly don’t know the purpose of bringing all that was mentioned in The Golden Record into space. However, I do know that space expeditions usually take months to finish, which means that astronauts need to stay in space for a while. Since that is the case, I feel like it would be fair to let the astronauts decide what they want to bring with them because they’re the ones who are leaving Earth. It’s like the question, “What would you take with you on to a island where there’s no Wi-Fi?” You wouldn’t let other people decide what to take for you.

I really don’t understand the point of bringing recordings of sounds up into space. Can you even hear sounds in space? I mean space has always interested me but I don’t think Ive ever thought about what would happen if someone did this. When I listened to the sounds and the music it was actually pretty soothing and relaxing. Also the thing about the 55 languages also confused me. But hey, I guess I don’t need to understand everything.

Its crazy to think about how there might be other living things in our universe. If i had the choice to send things that describe us i would send different types of genres of music, articles about huge impacts on our world and show pictures of skyscrapers to show we are able to construct things. I would also send pictures of fossils from dinosaurs to show the creatures that lived before us. There is many things you can send these are my opinions on what should get send im sure you can think of more significant things. Choosing an item to put in the spacecraft is very difficult to decide due to the fact that what we send out if it ever were to be found by other lifeforms in space needs to represent us all as a species/race and as a nation. If I had to choose an item to put into the spacecraft to be sent out to space I would send out a picture of firefighters holding up the United States flag on top of the rubbles of the twin towers after the tragic event of 9/11. The reason why I would choose to send this image out is that even if it was such a devastating day that picture represents us as a nation due to the fact that even if something that tragic occurred, as a nation we were able to get back up with the help of each other. The picture is a picture of hope, that no matter what happens we stand as a nation. There is a lot of other things that we could put in the spacecraft and I believe that this should be one of those items.
My question is, do you believe that there are other life forms out there? Do you think they will be similar to us, just like us, or totally different?

I think we should bring beats from the 21st century into space. Anything that could describe the world we live in now, such as, gun shots for gun violence. Because there are alot of languages I wouldnt know if they could include them all so it should be no voice or sounds but no lyrics. What else do you think I should have added? Whats missing?

As long as humankind has ventured into space, it has tried to take music into the unknown. But astronauts perform music for benefit of other humans. More interesting is the use of music to communicate with other life forms.The more one thinks about music being sent into space in the hope of reaching extraterrestrial lifeforms, the more it seems a pointless task. No piece of music, no matter how beloved, can ever capture more than the tiniest fraction of even humanity’s love of melody, let alone say anything broader about life on Earth. What’s more, space communication operates on timescales so vast that any piece of music will capture a tiny fragment of a time long gone by the point any life gets to hear it. So whats the point in send the music into space?

Hey michelle, what you said was very well written, But I think you answered your own question without realizing it. You state what is the point in sending music into space, but that music can be use to communicate with other life forms. Music has a way of communicating to anyone without even needed words of explanation. That is why it’s so fascinating. Even if their is no hope of extraterrestrial life forms in space, I still don’t believe it is a waste. You never know that in the near future , maybe millions of years from now that we will be living in space or other planets, and now have generations worth of music at disposal because it was launched into space. Always think of the countless imaginable possibilities, even if it seems impossible.

It was fascinating reading about how NASA created this time capsule of sorts for outerspace. I believe that the songs picked for the golden record were picked as a way to show the diversity of the world at that time. I heard many different genres of music, each beautiful in their own way. That is the same reason that there included 55 greetings and all of those pictures in the voyagers. If something like this were to be done in 2020, I don’ think there would be as many songs. Music is less diverse now. Artists just attempt to mimic each other. The bigger focus of a time capsule from this year would be more about the Coronavirus.

After listening to the several recordings, my question is why wasn’t there any hip hop records included on the golden record. My thought is that those in charge of the selection felt that there were elements of hip hop music that were distasteful, which they wouldn’t want as a part of America’s history. What do you think?

That’s an amazing point! and that made me think about how history is written by those who win, my own interpretation of that is history is written by those who are in control. actually my question to your question is how much of music from our past was actually written by African Americans or other ethnicities other than white, that where never written down in history (because of racism and prejudice) and given the credit they deserve because of white supremacy?

If we were to launch a spacecraft into space I think a simple use tablet with pre downloaded things would do the trick . The tablet would contain different music and pictures and videos with different languages and handwritings from different time periods so that if anyone is really out there they would be able to see what we have accomplished here on earth . I’m curious does anyone have better suggestions to what they would put into the craft that could make it more simple to understand?

If we were to send another Voyager out into space, there’s a lot of things that could be sent to show what life is like on Earth, but the smallest thing that would carry out that message would probably be smart phones. Language and communication got humanity to where it is today and smart phones not only help us communicate, but they entertain as well as educate thanks to the internet. There’s no internet out in space so the phone probably won’t do its job properly, so we’ll have to pre-install it with a history of Planet Earth as well as music from a variety of genres and languages throughout the ages and pictures of our society, accomplishments, and history in order to properly convey who we are as a planet and as the human race.

Hey everyone, I share the same sentiments with some of you ! On my space craft,I would definitely incorporate pictures, of popular landmarks from all over the world. People from different cultures, as well as the food they eat, and the music they listen to. I as well would provide geographic features, such as famous rivers, lakes, oceans, and mountains. I love animals, so I would get pictures of animals from all over the world to put on board as well. I think these images will create a vivid imagination in the minds of others, so they could gain some type of knowledge of what Earth is really about!

Oh man, Brianna! That’s a loaded question even though it’s straight forward. I would definitely say trap house, type beat music, rap and hip-hop, Christian music, R&B, pop, Latin music, and this is not music but podcasts as well. These are the type of music personally I feel are mostly listened to and popular in todays culture. But in all honesty if it where up to me I would definitely also add classical, soul, jazz, reggae ext.. I believe old music never dies, it gets reincarnated in different sounds lol. Therefore these sounds are still just as relevant and important.

sending things will not be hard, picking what to send will. There are a lot of things on earth that makes it special. I would suggest taking pictures of all the exotic places and sending them. Technology will definitely be included to show where we are in todays world. choosing what type of music send will probably be hard since music has developed a lot ever since but wi would say send one song from every genre. Sports, food, and hobbies should also be included to show how we spend our time and the type of food we eat. do you guys have any other ideas on what to send.

Goodnight everyone. This was a very interesting read. I had no idea music and space existed honestly. If I had to launch my own spacecraft, I would get one of those iPads and add as much content as I can on it. I would incorporate a lot of pictures and videos of everyday life. I would try to record a lot of content showing what its like living in the 21st century. But when it comes to music and choosing what I would add well I’ll be honest I have no idea. Music has become a big part in everyone’s life. So it would be difficult to just choose a few pieces to add . Like back in the day, we use to walk around with our music. We weren’t able to access them online. We’d have to record them on a CD and use radios, boom boxes, record players etc to listen to them. We’ve advanced a lot and now we’re able to access a lot of music on the internet. Honestly, debating what to put in this space craft is a little confusing but once they get a little insight of how the world has changed over the years that’s all that matters here. Just giving them a taste of how things are different now should be interesting. One thing I’ve learned from taking this class is that music has made a huge impact in my life which are beyond my imagination. Music changed. People changed. Technology is more advanced. Our world has developed beyond anyone’s control. So the spacecraft for 2020 would be totally different if it was launched.

Hey you guy! hope you guys are doing good. am I the only one that actually listened to each song individually from the voyager? Man it was actually really good. My favorites where El Cascabel and the well tempered Claver even though they are two different dynamic of sounds. El Cascabel gave me salsa dancing vibes and made me want to get up and dance. Well tempered Claver was more of a slow tune that brought me good vibes. There are many aspects of life on Earth that needs to be represented if launching a spacecraft however the most needed is music because music is universal. There is not a person on earth who is not familiar with sounds and music. So bringing different sounds from previous generations as well as introducing music from the 2000’s and on, will show the drastic change in musical sounds and how far music has come. The second requirement that I absolutely feel is needed in space is technology, specifically smartphones. The fact that one phone has the capacity to hold so many different features that caters to our human needs is highly incredible. Those alone will show the drastic shift in the world as generations go by.

Hey everybody if I could send something up to space I would fill it up with a ton of information. I would put pictures of nature like an ocean with beautiful water, a picture of a rainforest with all of the animals I would try to put what I do on a daily basis. I would put music of different genres I would love for that to happen that would be amazing. But if you guys had one specific thing to send what would that be only one?

They chose some interesting choices of music it’s a very diverse variety. Some are thrilling and others relaxing, honestly I think they chose at random. Its good to have a variety of music because when they are up in space alone for all that time they will have different moods which require different types of music. For example one of the pieces of music had a person playing either a guitar or banjo and just humming others had opera singers and piano players I’m pretty sure I even heard a flute at least once.These types of music must’ve kept them pretty entertained. An item I think needs to be on a spacecraft would be a smartphone because I would have access to so much stuff such as music, videos, pictures, and games so I would never be bored. What music would you have brought to space?

The song “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground” sounds like a country song. Today country songs still song like that. Many black AND white Americans like country music. I like the beat for one of the songs.

I Would likely put pictures of beautiful scenery around the world in there, because Earth is a beautiful place, places such as the Galapagos Islands. I would also put pictures of times of distress, for example wars or depression Eras. As humans we are not perfect, but we have achieved wonderful things. I would also add music by Khalid because he’s my favorite artist, if I had to choose one, I would choose “Coaster”. I would also include a video of what the internet can do, to show how we have created a way for us to interact with anyone around the world.
