This week’s online discussion will be a bit different from our previous discussions because almost all of the content will be listening-based rather than text-based. Below you’ll find links to pages with videos demonstrating various common (and uncommon) musical instruments found in Western classical music, grouped by instrument family (i.e., all the instruments on a single page produce sound in a similar way). There are many more instruments in the world than are included here, but this is a good introduction.
As you read and watch, think about ways you can describe the timbre or sound quality of the various instruments you hear, or other ways to group their sounds besides instrument family—these sonic details, just like the distinctions in sounds you’ve been noticing as you completed your soundscape journals, are what bring all of our other musical elements to life.

Putting your attentive listening to work
In class this week, we’ll be listening to examples of symphonies, or large works for orchestra. What instruments a composer uses (or has available) doesn’t just reflect his or her taste or preferences; it’s also determined by the prevailing style of music when he or she was alive.
Here are three examples of symphonies from three different composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Classical era), Ludwig van Beethoven (early Romantic), Johannes Brahms (late Romantic). As you listen, use your attentive listening and knowledge of different instrument sounds to learn more about how the symphony orchestra has changed over time:
- What instruments are used: What instrument(s) do you hear? Are some instrument families missing from the complete orchestra?
- How those instruments are used: What instrument(s) are playing the melody?

Final thoughts
As suggested by how many instruments are included in this lesson, and the fact that it barely scratches the surface of all the instruments people play around the world, the world of musical instruments is huge. You can find woodwind, brass, string, and percussion instruments all over the world, and there are infinite combinations out there for you to experience and enjoy.

I enjoyed all 3 of these pieces of music. My favorite one would be the 3 pierce by Johannes Brahms. It has a very steady pulse to it and I love that all these 3 pieces have a climax and the violin was very outstanding in these pieces. They build that dramatic energy and gave interesting moments where it would suddenly break down and the bpm or the pulse of the song would slow down and I enjoyed this most of all because it got me very interested where the song would go

My favorite piece was “Eroica.” It translates to heroic. The piece of music paints a picture in my mind that the hero is out to save the day. I really enjoyed listening to it because it was very smooth yet robust.

I can say that I agree that this music is smooth it does paint a picture in your mind especially if your in that mood for that classical feel it’s very different for me.

All three of those pieces of music sounded wonderful. But if i actually had to pick only one, it would eventually have to be “Johannes Brahms, Symphony No. 3 in F Major, I. Allegro”. The reason i liked this piece was because it reminded me of scenes that you would typically see in classical movies. Its giving me vibes of “The Wizard of Oz” as well as “Casablanca”. Brings back memories, and that’s what i love about music.

I agree the Johannes Brahms, Symphony is music you would typically here in classical movies or even classical tv shows. It reminds me of the Old Fashion Disney movies I would watch as a little girl with my mom.

Johannes Brahms intro reminded me of an intro into the james bond movies. Just because of the strong then light rhythm of the instruments I instantly hear the trumpets and the power of the song when it first started and then the soft slow pastes after it. It stood out to me. The other two pieces are also just as good with the violins working together following the same paste and the pitches raising high and low following a good flow and it not being all over place. If a piece of this was used in the music I listen to today I’d believe it would be a successful hit

Out of the three pieces of classical music, i enjoyed the Symphony No. 3 in F Major, I. Allegro by Johannes Brahms the most. It was the most moving to me and seem the most dramatic to me, the use of string and woodwind instruments is amazing and it reminds me of a cinematic movie background music like lord of the rings. I deeply appreciated the harmonious tone of the song and unlike the other two songs this song, Johannes Brahms symphony stood out to me as a more in depth look of how a collection of a instruments can make a masterpiece like this one. I would definitely listen to this song on my own free time because it puts me in a place of calmness.

I concur with your opinion on the use of woodwinds and strings. They are a very light yet effective use of instruments. They deliver urgency, yet patience. Boldness yet timid notes. It gives me this weird light and fluffy feeling because it’s compacted with multiple sounds however it is still very light sounding.

I agree with you and also my genre isn’t classical music so it’s kind of hard but I totally understand that it does calm you down. Im not likely to explore music or listen to anything out of my comfort zone but this does leave one calmed.

These symphonies are very enjoyable. They have a very sweet tune although there are moments of deep dark notes. I believe this sweet tune is created using specific instrument families. In these symphonies I hear mostly strings, woodwinds, and keyboard instruments. Which goes to show that in this period of music use of instrument families like voice, brass, and percussion were not utilized in the construction of music.
In these symphonies, I noticed that the strings seemed to be playing the melody while the woodwinds were playing notes that supported/emphasized specific notes in the melody.

I heard brass instruments being played in the symphonies but did not hear any keyboard. Can I ask where you heard keyboard being played, just in case I missed it and I can go back and hear it for myself so I know how to listen out for it the next time. And I agree, strings definitely carried the melody while the woodwinds supported with harmony.

Yes I was going to ask the same thing in which symphomy was the keyboard played? Because I heard different types of instruments but wasn’t sure where the keyboard played.

Throughout the listening experience I’d say the one I least enjoyed was Voice. Not being able to understand what is being sang usually distracts me and loses my attention. I really enjoyed the instruments, I find them easier to follow and connect to.

Although I understand what you mean by saying “not being able to understand what is being said, loses your attention”, I’d say that Voice was my favorite. With my favorite genre of music being hip hop, I never thought that I’ll fall in love with opera lol! But that changed when I took Theater class back in high school. Voice takes me back to my old theater class when I first watched “Phantom Of the Opera”. Like you, I couldn’t understand what was being said, but I was always amazed by the Sounds being made. How the voice is truly an instrument and how singers can change the pitches, keys, and tones etc., that to me is impossible! So although you cant hear the words, try to think of the voice Not as Singing, but as an instrument. Just listen to the sounds that the voice makes and maybe you’ll enjoy it more.

While listening to this music I hear a lot of the violin and flutes. I also use to play the steel pan so it brings backs memories on the notes we use to hit and I could hear the crescendos also. You hear woodwinds and the strings also

I really loved this blog post, especially the part about the instruments, I was surprised to see the different types of woodwinds especially the “bassoon” its huge as an instrument. I wonder how much it weighs (according to google 7 1/2 pounds). I loved the 3 symphonies but my favorite is undoubtedly the third “Johannes Brahms, Symphony No.3 in F Major, I. Allegro”. I also noticed that the violin is probably the most present instrument in symphonies.

I enjoyed watching the trumpet playing “Flight of the bumble bee”. It was just amazing by watching the fingers on trumpet moved so fast. Also he didn’t run out of breath. My favorite symphony was “Mozart, Symphony No. 29 in A Major, K. 201, I. Allegro moderato”. I personally think classical music sounds the best when the string instruments play the majority parts in performance. I liked when violins and double basses played at the same time throughout the music.

I definitely agree with what your saying, listening to the Voice I literally felt like its impossible to understand what she’s saying. Listening to Brass and Keyboard instruments was by far my favorite. Hearing Miles Davis, it was calm and peaceful. Then the Keyboard instruments listening to Ludwig van Beethoven, seeing the fast motion of his hands on the keys is amazing. His hands are care moving so fast, with no mistakes. I could literally sit down, eat and watch him play.

An orchestra is similar to a choir with less variety. Like an orchestra, a choir includes different timbres that have different ranges which then all come together to produce a big, dynamic sound.
In the three music pieces by different composers, they all had orchestra just with different instrumentations which I thought wasn’t done because I thought that symphonies always included every instrument in their works. Personally, it was a little easier to hear the different instruments since I went to a performing arts HS and as a vocal major, I worked with a lot of the instrumental majors and I got to experience the different sounds from different instruments all the time.
For the first piece by Mozart, I noticed that there was no percussion, barely any brass, no keyboard or voice involved in the the first movement. For brass, I think I heard a horn. It was a lesser complex instrumentation than the rest of the pieces especially with having just one instrument from the brass family. For the second piece by Beethoven, I heard woodwind instruments like the flute, oboes, clarinets and perhaps the bassoon. I heard brass instruments like horns, trumpets, trombones, timpani and of course strings. For the third and last piece, I heard woodwinds like mentioned before and maybe the contrabassoon because it sounded lower than the bassoon I’ve heard before. It also included the brass family of instruments. Lastly, it included strings as did the other two pieces. None of these pieces really had percussion or at least I didn’t hear it. I’m not sure if the performances used all the instruments the symphonies were composed for. They also didn’t have any keyboard or voice. My question to you all is: why do you think there’s no keyboard or voice in the symphonies we’ve listened to?
I would say that all pieces incorporated the strings family because they often always play on the soprano line (higher pitch range) and the soprano line usually carries the melody in compositions. The rest of the instruments either had some points where they joined the melody or supported it through harmony.
In conclusion, I enjoyed listening to all the pieces as they helped me write this long comment! I usually listen to romantic guitar music for studying and school work.

I’d like to start off by saying the Brahms piece in the beginning and throughout sounds very Disney. I just loved it. When I closed my eye’s I could just imagine the animation. It is quite difficult for me to pick up on instruments, not all instruments just the less basic ones. It is quite easy for me to hear a brass instrument but not really which one. With strings, it’s very easy for me to tell. Whether it is being played pizzicato or being played conticello [ which, I admit sounds quite terrifying]. The same goes for the piano, harpsichord and the organ. As for the Mozart piece I can tell you what I heard for sure – strings; violins, cellos etc. I think I heard a brass, though not entirely sure.
For the second I heard possibly Flutes, Piccolo’s, and some Brass [ Don’t really have a good ear]. And for the third and most amazing piece, I think I heard a multitude of instruments. Again with the Flutes, Piccolo’s, and strings. Possibly another woodwind. Maybe the Clarinet?
I really liked this week’s online discussion because it was more about listening and I always have a good time when listening to good music. I surprised that there weren’t any key instruments involved in any of the listening pieces. No Basso Continuo? Although I’m sure that is strictly Baroque. Also as far as the string’s the Lute wasn’t mentioned, and none of the instruments involving the xylophone family. Which is percussion?

All three pieces was amazing , my favorite I’ll say is the second piece by Eroica it puts me in a different mood it actually made me close my eyes, it reminds me of a black-and-white movie it also reminds me of that musical play /movie called the sound of music.

Yes, I was also reminded of the Play/Movie the sound of music from the second symphony as well. It’s a very sweet tune that alternates from big and bold notes to light and flowing notes.

Also it seems like everyone really likes the Brahms piece. It just really has a great feeling attached to it. Someone had made a comment that it reminded them of the Wizard of Oz and I agree. Really great music selections this time around.

The perspective I have on the five times of oprah is that they all so very nice but they don’t follow the same rhythm and it didn’t follow the same pace. The soprano was very loud but she sang very slowly while the Alto was a lot lower than that and it’s pace was much quicker than that by that the lady sang her song much faster. As for the Tenor it’s style of singing was low as an indoor voice and very quick. The bass and Castrate were similar by that they were sang at the same tone and pace and loudness.

My favorite piece was the last one. It reminded me of Disney movies, maybe like Cinderella. When I listened with my eyes closed it gave me visuals of maybe wandering around a palace or forest, the weather is nice and sunny and little animals are near by admiring. But it does get a little faster and deeper at some parts. I cannot distinguish if they’re supposed to be happy or angry tones.

Ha I thought it was only me. When the professor asked, write down what instruments you hear I was trying so hard to listen but the slightest fluctuation made me second guess myself. Listening to all the instrument gave me a better idea but I think unless we listen to this type of music on a regular it would take years to differentiate.

Yes, for instead I heard pianos in these pieces but from the feedback I’ve received on my posts, I may be the only one hearing that. I hope I would be able to distinguish different sounds to identify which instrument group they belong to. Does any one have any suggestions on how we could improve our instrument identifying ear?

I love three of the piece but the thing I realized is that when I was hearing one music to the other it makes a picture in my mind. I started thinking this music can be of princess who is walking. The music makes me analys that if we have not seen the video we still can imagine the video or characters behind the music. Isn’t it amazing I find this great. Even I have not seen any video but still can imagine. We can analys the music either it is for sad moment or for happy and the previous videos in our life’s can kind of connect with this piece like I have listen the music in back of a movie while they are speaking thier dialogues,the cartoons and dramas so some from those music I contacted them and that’s how I am able to imagine the whole scene.

I agree violin can be very peaceful and it is always the first instruments besides a bass that I notice in a piece. Violin is one of my favorite instruments is because it reminds of a old time Disney movie because that is one instrument you always hear.

My favorite piece has to be Mozart symphony No. 29. I like how in this piece out of the three is more consistent with the intensity. The other two pieces have a much more dramatic build up in intensity when compared to the Mozart symphony. I also feel like this lack of a build up makes the piece a lot more graceful when compared to the others. This can probably be attributed to the majority use of string based instruments playing lighter tones.

Out of the three musical pieces included above I would deem Mozart, Symphony No. 29 in, I. Allegro moderato to be my favorite. I enjoy listening to the gradual up and down pattern as it signals my attention for what Im about to hear. The violins and bass are what stood out to me the most. It’s very melodic and fluid which is why Mozart’s music is captivating and highly detailed. While listening to it I was taken back to the time where I heard one of the first instrumentals which I really liked named “And I thought I was a Pyro” from this game I was really into.

As I listened to the various instruments, I tried to identify the quality of sound they produced. With the flute – I heard the wind being blown into the instrument as it creates its sound. It has a sharp, shimmering, piercing, and very bright tone. The Oboe sound more expressive and rich and has a bright tone also. The Piccolo is very high-pitched, screechy and it creates a penetrating sound. The bassoon sounds lower and nasal. The Brass instruments reminds me of the military and parades. The trumpet has a bright, brassy, strong timbre, while the French horn sounds harsher. The trombone is powerful and brassy while the tuba has a deep and airy tone. With the strings the violin sounds rich, clear and distinct from the other instruments. The cello has a deeper tone. The harp sounds mellow and smooth. The keyboard instruments like the piano also has a clear, bright distinct sound. The organ has a brash, sharp, thin and somewhat unpleasant tone while the guitar has a warmer tone.

Apart from instruments families, I think instruments can also be group by what it’s made from. E.g stone, wood, metal, glass; and based on the way they produce their sounds.

I was able to identify instruments from almost all the instrument families as I listened the three pieces of music. In “Mozart, Symphony No. 29,” the instruments being played are woodwinds (oboe), String (viola, Violin, cello) and Brass (French horn). Percussion and keyboard is not included. It sounds like the melody is being played by the strings and the Woodwind instruments and Brass instruments are adding harmony. In Ludwig Van Beethoven Symphony NO. 3, the instruments used are Woodwinds (Oboe, bassoon, clarinet, piccolo), String (violin, cello, double bass), Brass (French horn, Trumpet) and Percussion (Timpani). I didn’t hear any keyboard instruments. The melody is being played by all or most of the instruments. In Johannes Brahms, Symphony No. 3, I also hear Strings (Violins, cello, bass), Woodwinds (flute, clarinet, oboe, piccolo, bassoon), Brass (French horn, trombones, Trumpet) and Percussion (timpani). It sounds like the wood winds and the strings are playing the melody in this piece. All three pieces are in Sonata form.

I love this post so much because all 3 of these pieces of music are so wonderful but if I have to choose one of them I would choose Mozart, Symphony No. 29 in A Major. I used to be in a percussion group for more than 7 years when I was studying in Hong Kong. I heard a lot of violin from this piece of music and I love Lang Lang who is playing piano from the keyboard instruments. This week discussion does bring me back a lot of my old memories .

In Mozart’s piece, you can clearly hear string instruments being used. I would assume violin and viola since it sounds more high pitched and it seems like the kind of music that would play at a wealthy person’s ball. I think in Beethoven’s there’s most likely violin and cello, much more dramatic than the others. Brahms Symphony was definitely my favorite out of the three, I felt that it expressed more emotion than the rest and I think there was an oboe along with string instruments. This symphony felt like it would play in a classic movie or in a love scene, it just makes me feel calm/happy. My cat however is biting and hitting my phone trying to get it to stop playing, I guess it doesn’t have the same effect on everyone.

My favorite piece was Eroica by Beethoven because it was very nostalgic. While visiting the Palace of Versailles in France in the summer, I heard this piece all over the courtyard. I like how it went from being very dramatic to then a sense of gracefulness, There is a sense of slow tempo and then it gradually increases as the violin becomes more aggressive. I feel that the strings family might have had the biggest impact on this piece because it was as if it was leading the song. The dramatic build up of the song has me on my toes, because I do not know what to expect next. I like how the end has a series of soft playing instruments to signal to the listener that the piece will be coming to an end.

Listening to all the instruments was amazing. Gives me more of an understanding of what sounds come from what. Some that stand out for me were, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Flight of the Bumblebee (1900) & Mexican Hat Dance (trad.), performed by Rafael Mendez. This was because his fingers move so fast to produce that music, you have to be skilled at not messing up and the amount of air required to make it flawless. Although I think the cello is my new favorite instrument the way Johann Sebastian Bach, Cello Suite No. 1, BWV 1007, I. Prelude, performed by Micha Maisky played was great. Music for me has always been on the side of the listener but getting to see everything that it takes to make music, it gave it a new meaning and more respect to the people who actually make music.

The melody was in Mozart Symphony No. 29 was played by violins. There out the whole symphony you can hear the violin. You can also hear a cello supporting the violin in the background.

I didn’t hear much diversity in Mozart Symphony No. 29, which is kinda strange. Its different than most symphony’s I’ve heard, most of the time symphony’s use an large diversity of instruments. Mozart Symphony No. 29 doesn’t do the obvious bombarding of instruments, but instead Mozart lets the lead carry the song from start to finish. With that said I didn’t hear any percussion instruments which I feel could’ve added a different dynamic to the symphony.

It kind of remind me of a Disney movie. I can recognized the violin in all 3 pieces which made the music more interested for me. I was always fascinated with the sound of the violin.
It is very hard for me to distinguish between the instruments because I am not very familiar with this type of music it was never my thing.
I realized now that I have never payed attention to the instrument used in the music, but since taking this class find myself trying to recognized the instrument used it is difficult for me but I am hoping by the end of the semester I will be more knowledgeable about this type of music.

Though all three is not my preference of music, I actually enjoy and noticed sounds that I hear every day. I feel like the string sounds, the violin and etc, is in shows and movies we seen growing up. For example : Tom & Jerry, Scooby-Doo, and etc. Even though I have heard string instruments I can’t tell a distinction between them. Can you tell the difference between John Sebastian Bach’s violin to Robert Schumann’s viola ? (I honestly can’t really)

I personally enjoyed like many others here Johannes Brahms, Symphony No. 3. The strings played in this symphony really hits deep. But i honestly enjoy Mahler’s symphony no.8 ever since i heard it on 105.9 fm awhile back.

Out of the 3 pieces my favorite would have to be the second one and the first one would follow after that. In the first song I heard a band with strings being the main instrument for the melody. The second song was my favorite because of the full band. I heard a lot of brass instruments which is my favorite group of instruments because I play the French Horn. I always listen out for horns in songs like these.

I enjoyed Johannes Brahms, Symphony No.3 because I feel as though it has a lot of music elements to it. I enjoy how it goes back and forth between low and loud it emphasizes on the intensity of certain parts in the piece. There are certain parts in the music that emphasizes sadness and there are parts that emphasizes anxiousness as if something is about to happen. Parts in this piece also sounds as if it building up on a climax. I also feel like I really enjoy this piece because it reminds me the type of music you will find in a Disney’s Princess movie.

The three pieces of music was enjoyable, filled with violinist taken the leading aspect in all. Actually the second piece is my favorite, very intense and demonstrated suspense, creating an array of variations. Painting such a moment, what is going to be happening next.

I heard a lot of strings in all 3 pieces, but as we learned in our soundscape journal we hear what we mostly focus on. So maybe that is the reason why I only hear strings. But in the 3rd piece I heard more than one type of instrument, one sounded like a flute. I really enjoyed the last piece because it was so dramatic, sounded like something that would be in a movie.

I really enjoyed Mozart Symphony No 29 it was just an amazing delightful melody with the various sounds in the orchestra it was just great.

i really enjoyed Ludwig van Beethoven’s symphony No. 3 ” Eroica ” I Allegro con brio, this symphony was very calm but also was very upbeat and it brought my mind to different places. There were all sorts of instruments used, and as the symphony kept going and kept playing many new sounds were added and many instruments were introduced. There were trumpets, clarinets, violins, flutes and strings. There was a big mix of instruments and it was a very soothing and upbeat symphony to listen to. This also sort of brought my mind back to the traditional known Disney Movies. It made me think of a love story, sort of when a prince and a princess meet. It also made my mind think to some Disney movies where they are first meeting and it is very sneaky and they fall in love. This symphony was very interesting and not only did i think of old romantic Disney movies, but it was sort of heroic. Sometimes when something is going good and then something messes it up and someone comes and saves the day. i truly enjoyed this piece and it was definitely my favorite, it brought out different ideas and assumptions about what this piece may be about and also, made me relate with my prior knowledge and what i have already seen and experienced.

My favorite piece is Mozart, symphony No. 29 because this piece’s melody is very energetic sounds, and they use string instruments such as violin, cello. I can recognize violin sounds because it is high, sharp and clear tone. Ludwing Van Beethovan, symphony No.3 and Johannes Brahms, symphony are both used flutes. When flutes are played and other music instruments’ volume decrease. I think musicians want to show flutes’ special tone. I don’t hear any piano sounds present in these three pieces. I only can recognize three or four instruments are used when I listen these three pieces of music. Also, I believe all of instruments are combined to make rich sounds of music for audiences, but a person (like me) who don’t have music training background or education that is hard for me to recognize each of instrument is used in these three piece of music. In addition, voice is a part of instrument families? I never know that before because I think music instruments are somethings people can play, touch, see matters. Right now I learn this new music knowledge. I enjoy soprano, and I hear over two times. The woman singer in Der Holle Rache Kocht in Meinem Herzen voice is perfect because her voice sounds are thick, clear.

As I listened to all 3 pieces I was fascinated with each and every one of then But my favorite one I would say would be the Mozart Symphony. The Mozart Symphony was my favorite because is was really elegant and was something I would imagine ball dancing too. Even though I also liked the Brahms Symphony because it reminded me of my childhood memories watching Disney movies and traveling to Disney World.

I really enjoy the first piece of music, I like the way it goes from down to high, it remains me somehow to the can can dance, the rhyme sound a little bit the same, all the instruments that catch my attention the most were the piano, violins, trumpets and the clarinet. Also all the pieces took me back to a orchestra concert that I went to.

while listening to the three types of pieces of music i cant help but to think how similar they are back in the day having a orchestra in a song. comparing to now, we would have mostly duple type of songs. it is really fascinating to listen what was really popular when it comes to in those days vs what we have now……. so many differences that it became a culture shock to me.

I personally agree with everything in this article, cause I been able to experience many of them being at a college summer band camp. One thing that really popped out to me and amazes me is that with some of these instruments they have there our pitches like Alto flute from a regular flute or a flute with a higher tone. Also the 4 different pitches but the fifth in particular that ended in the 18th century. I’m really interested in researching more about that pitch.

Eroica by Beethoven was satiable to my soul. The ways in which he used the flute and the clarinet was very astute on how evenly they blended to perform a common function. To some, it may seem enigmatic but to me it was perfect. The flow, rhythm and beat were soft in a way which seemed benign. It was much more lively as it gave me a warm feeling. It’s definitely an intuitive piece that I would consider listening to if I were I were alone all by myself in a cozy setting.

I really enjoyed listening to the last piece because it gave off a very enchanting vibe. When listening to it I felt at ease so I think it would be a piece that I’d be able to listen to often and not get tired of it. I also enjoyed Mozart No. 29 because I like to hear the sound of violins play, the strings were nice to listen to throughout the piece.

The piece that I enjoyed the most was Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major “Eroica,” I. Allegro con brio, Ludwig van Beethoven. What I particularly enjoyed the most was the progression of the string instruments, then all instruments coming to a peak in full harmony, finally, it feels like it has come to a resolution.
